Indian Desserts That You Have Never Heard Of

For many people, ordering an Indian takeaway is the favourite part of their week. They will have their favourite dishes, which they rotate between each time they order. However, for others, there is a desire to sample new and interesting dishes, that they may have missed in the past.

Often, one of the most overlooked aspects of Indian cuisine is the dessert section. Sometimes, this is simply because the main course has been so incredibly filling. However, the general reason is that people aren’t willing to try a dish that they have never heard of. Should you be someone that is interested in enhancing their order, and wish to gain an insight into the world of Indian desserts, please feel free to continue reading.

Firni

This is considered to be a staple of Indian cuisine, and bound to be on the menu of any authentic Indian takeaway. It goes by a number of alternative names, such as Kheer and Payasa. At its most basic, it can be compared to a rice pudding; however, there is much more to it than this. Traditionally accompanied by an assortment of flakes, coming from such foods as pistachios and almonds, this dish is smooth and sumptuous.

Raskadam

For those that are a fan of simple desserts, look no further than Raskadam. This is traditionally a dish that consists of four ingredients. Khoa is a dairy product that, whilst comparable to cheese, retains less moisture – which is what makes up the bulk of the dish. Combined with chana, a variation on traditional cheese curd, sugar, and poppy seeds, this is a very sweet dish you are bound to enjoy.

Chena Poda

Combining cottage cheese and caramelised sugar, alongside a smattering of dried fruits, this is a very interesting dish which is guaranteed to set your tastebuds alight. Its literal translation of ‘burnt cheese’ is enough to turn most people off of this dish, but if you decide to try this, you can experience a range of flavours that, before now, will never have even occurred to you as options.
