Lots of people love Indian food for the incredible range of spices that are used in every dish. The flavour you get from Indian food is like no other and you can always guarantee that your meal will pack a punch. If you love hot and spicy food then Indian is likely to be one of your favourite cuisines and understandably so.

When ordering an Indian takeaway, there is bound to be someone that will be browsing the menu for the hottest dish available. As you may know, hot Indian dishes aren’t for the faint-hearted and they don’t hold back on spice. If you love these dishes and are looking for some new ones to try, ChefOnline has put together a list of the top 5 spiciest dishes – in no particular order, as they’re all incredibly spicy.

Vindaloo

This is probably the most well known spicy Indian dish. For many years it was considered to be the spiciest dish available however, it now has some great competition. That being said, a vindaloo curry isn’t for everyone. Vindaloo originates from Goa, India and there are now many variations of the recipe. The authentic vindaloo is a dry sauce-based dish Kashmiri chillis and this is where it gets its heat from.

Phaal

A phaal curry is not recognised as the hottest Indian curry served outside of India. It was invented by British Indian restaurants in Birmingham, who wanted to combine Indian spices with the spiciest chillies in the world. You will find a large number of ground standard chilli peppers along with hotter types of chilli such as scotch bonnet or habanero in this curry. Lots of restaurants offer the Phaal Curry as an eating challenge, so if you think you can handle it then find somewhere to give it a go.

Laal Maas

In Rajasthan, a place dominated by vegetarian cuisine, the only non-vegetarian dish to really stand out is laal maas. This dish derives its signature heat from a special Rajasthani red chilli known as the Mathania. You will also find a collection of spices, whole red chilis and mustard oil within this curry to create the intense hot flavour. Its deep red colour instantly looks spicy and we can guarantee that it will please spice lovers.

Kolhapuri Chicken

Kolhapur in Maharashtra has a rich culinary tradition, it is widely known for its exquisite spices and fiery hot curries. Kolhapuri Chicken is one of its spiciest dishes. With its insane combination of black pepper powder, cinnamon, garlic, green chilis and dry red chilis this dish is not for everyone. Even though it is traditionally cooked in a coconut-based curry sauce, this isn’t enough to settle the spice.

Kozhi

This dish is a hot, spicy chicken curry from Kerala. Kozhi curry is believed to have been introduced to India by early Jewish settlers and is one of the state’s hottest dishes. It is traditionally prepared using a combination of fresh green chilli peppers and dried ground chilli peppers. Unlike the majority of other spicy curries, the chicken in a kozhi is marinated in chilli powder, making the meat pieces and the intense red sauce equally spicy.

Trying these spicy dishes

If you really want to put your tastebuds to the test then next time your order food from an Indian restaurant make sure that one of the curries mentioned above is on your list. Of course, thankfully due to the range of spices used in Indian food, just because the dish is hot doesn’t mean it lacks flavour. So, you can trust that although it will be incredibly hot, it will still taste amazing.
